The first stop on the train journey through Rajasthan was its capital – Jaipur.
Known as ‘the pink city’, Jaipur got its nickname in 1876, thanks to Prince Albert’ visit that year. In India, pink symbolizes hospitality, so the entire city was painted in that color to welcome the prince.
The original capital, Amber, is located approximately 11 kilometers from Jaipur. The capital was moved to Jaipur in 1727, largely due to the construction of the new astronomical observatory – the Jantar Mantar.
